The Story Behind Lola Children’s Home

Born during the infamous famine of 1984, Abebe lost his parents as a child and survived as one of the many street children in Mekelle. His life changed forever when he was accepted into an orphanage, an experience that inspired him to dedicate his future to helping vulnerable children.

After earning his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Addis Ababa University and working for a non-profit in Addis Ababa, he returned to Mekelle, determined to give back.

What started 12 years ago with a single child has grown—thanks to generous supporters worldwide—into a home caring for 85 children through home care, daycare, and community outreach programs. Today, Lola Children’s Home is also responding to the devastation caused by war, building an emergency rehabilitation center for displaced children, mothers, and families in crisis.

I could not stand still while children suffered in the streets—I had to return and give back to the community that shaped me.
— Abebe Fantahum, Founder
